The Caldecott Award Committee

The Lower Division Teacher Librarian, Maria Paz Alegre, has been honored to join the very exclusive and prestigious 2023 Caldecott Award Committee. Only 16 people in the world are selected to judge and bestow this famous award that recognizes the most distinguished contribution of a picture for Children in the United States. Believe it or not, this entire process began in 2021 and will continue into 2024! First, Ms. Alegre had to receive a nomination for this committee. Afterwards, her nomination was reviewed by a team of librarians to judge her eligibility which included many emails and phone calls. After this rigorous process, Ms. Alegre was chosen to stand for election for the Caldecott Award Committee. Thousands of children’s librarians around the country read about Ms. Alegre and her achievements and background as a children’s librarian. In April 2022, she won the election! Ms. Alegre could not be more excited about this award committee and is especially enthusiastic about sharing thousands of new books with her amazing students at Allen-Stevenson.
